What Is Orthorexia Nervosa? | Eating Disorders

August 19, 2019

Orthorexia nervosa is another one of these
eating terms that’s not an official diagnosis, but refers to an increasingly observed phenomenon
of an attention to health, very healthy eating and regular exercise that of course in many
people is with the best of intentions. But for people that start to get this label of
orthorexia nervosa, the idea is a preoccupation with health and wellness and healthy eating
and regular exercise becomes so intense that it starts to become a little bit disproportionately
so. And so that peoples lives are starting to be really taken over by that preoccupation
with health, rigid healthy eating and over exercising. So it’s sort of a lifestyle and
when it starts to become very tied to a person’s self esteem and well being, at the exclusion
of other things there’s a possibility that really it can start to take on a life of it’s
own and maybe be a psychological problem worth addressing. So that’s sort of the idea of
orthorexia nervosa. Orthorexia nervosa is a controversial term, because people that
have already committed to a lifestyle of health and wellness of course think that this is
the way to go. And it may or may not be clear whether a person is engaged in very healthy
eating practices and that’s functioning very well for them or when a person may sort of
step over the line into some of these practices starting to become a little bit problematic.

  1. That's the problem with ppl with a nervosa. THEY CAN'T CONTROL IT. It's like trying to stop taking heroine after getting addicted.

  2. Exactly…it's very easy to be ironic with people's problems when it's not you suffering the psychological problem. It's is just like depression…some people may just say: depression my ass, you life is great…but nobody has a clue what is actually going on deep inside ones mind :-/

  3. Yes, definitely. "You have a psychological disorder. Get the hell over it." Same as: "You have cancer. Get the hell over it."
    Fucking dumbshit.

  4. Its all in your head darling. You are making your self be like that. You have no idea how strong your brain is,You can do and achieve anything with it. People like these annoy me. There are people in Africa and other countries that are starving and have no food,And some stupid girls are starving themselves to look good or for their other reasons. Its like..Grow the fuck up and stop with the drama.

  5. the idiot here is you. I haven't said anything unrealistic. I know what causes it but there are some people that are just being dramatic and are starving themselves to look good. There's this other side as well.

  6. Perhaps you should also grow up and stop disregarding other people's problems. Just because someone in Africa has it worse changes nothing. There will always be someone who has it worse. Instead of shallow judging, go ask yourself why people get these disorders nowadays. Hint: usually it's more than just fashion and wanting to look good.
Getting annoyed by something that is none of your business is not exactly a sign of maturity either. Don't wanna listen about it? Don't watch the video. Simple.

  7. Exactly. That's what's so bad about it. It is in *their heads (I don't have it.) and that makes it worse. Anorexia is a very real thing. This particular 'disease' that she's saying in the video, I doubt is real, that's more an OCD mixed with Anorexia, but eating disorders are very real. I used to battle mild anorexia, and it was odd. Very odd. You'd see your favorite food, and your mouth wouldn't water. You'd be thinking "did I skip enough to eat this? How much will I gain? I can't eat it… :("

  8. I suppose depression is all in their head? Because it is. But no one wants to be sad. When you really think, no one WANTS to spend their teenage years sitting alone on their bed with a razor to their wrist, and a list of their faults in their mind. But that happens. It's a true unbalance in the brain. Most people can't open their heads and squish their brain to get it to react normally. I don't know about you.

  9. Well,I am sorry if my comment caused so many people to react. I guess its my personality to just say what I think out-loud.

  10. This was what i was diagnosed with, along with bulimia and anorexia. but it was VERY serious. I was into building muscle and I was never 'ripped' enough and I was so sucked into this nervosa. I was in treatment for a month, Eating disorders are so so so sad and how many people they affect. <3 Love to all who are suffering, Recovery feels amazing!
