What Causes Binge Eating? | Eating Disorders

August 23, 2019

As a clinical researcher, as well as a clinician
who treats folks with binge eating, I wish we knew exactly why people develop binge eating.
I think, what we do know about most eating problems, is that there’s really a combination
of factors; there can be some deep rooted psychological or emotional issues that can
be linked to why a person develops binge eating. There’s also likely to be certain biological
predispositions, perhaps some genetic predispositions to developing problems like binge eating.
In one model of what causes binge eating, the cognitive behavioral model of binge eating,
this model sort of takes a look at the binge eating behavior, and how it’s linked to the
utilization of certain types of dietary rules. How that’s linked to preoccupations and over
preoccupations with shape and weight, and how that is linked to other types of disturbances
or difficulties that the person maybe experiencing in their emotional life, whether that’s depression,
whether that’s self esteem problems, whether that’s identity problems, or some other type
of problem. So, there is probably no one right answer as to what causes binge eating for
a particular person. It’s likely to be a combination of emotional and biological factors. Whatever
the case, starting to talk about binge eating problem with an experienced professional can
help start to sort out, for you, what were the causes of your binge eating problem, how
do we start to address the issues that are there, the behaviors that are there, and make
a treatment plan that can help you start to get a handle on that behavior.

  1. go back to how to pick a lock. nobody cares about these stupid personal problem videos. its called howcast not how to feel good about yourself cast

  2. i used to binge eat because i was very depressed and food made me feel happier but im better now and im paying the price for it, i gained 25 pounds over the past year. trying to lose it now xP

  3. I was half expecting the 'psychiatrist' to advise on "mindful eating" — eating slowly. But nope, it just leaves people more puzzled than ever.

  4. binge eating is a psychological disorder. it has to do with your relationship to food, not the amount that you consume. i eat 3000+ calories/day, but because i don't use gorging myself as a crutch, eating more calories than most people consider normal demonstrates caloric necessity from exercise, rather than a pathological condition.

  5. When I binge eat cookies I eat it because it tastes and feels good. Quit trying to make it more complicated than it is. Stupid "professionals". If I want to stop binge eating I wont buy the cookies anymore which I have done. I dont need a professional to say a bunch of fancy words and diagnose me with a mental problem and possibly give medication to stop eating cookies. This is what I hate about the world today.

  6. Nah I just think its silly that a group of people conduct a scientific study based on theory and they try to generalize everyones thoughts into one category. I know we are all human and come from the same thing but I believe that I am different from people. When I binge eat I dont do it because I am depressed, I do it because I enjoy the spike in blood glucose and the amazing flavor. Its like saying people who go to mexico to enjoy the sun and some drinks are depressed. Which is quite silly..

  7. they aren't generalizing, they're saying the most common causes, and i feel the same way you do, i believe i do not eat because i'm depressed or something, i just enjoy it. But i may be wrong, it could be something else. We have to be open about other options, because it's not normal.

  8. Hi! Thanks for this helpful video. By the way, I notice a lot of people keep on talking about Bulimilorex Remedy (do a search on google), but I'm not sure if it's good. Have you tried home remedy called Bulimilorex Remedy? I've heard several great things about it and my friend completely cure her bulimia safely with this remedy.

  9. The annoying thing about binge eating is i eat all this food, feel guilty, gain weight. but it's so hard to lose the weight when all you can ever think about is when You're going to be able to binge next. Not sure if it's the case for you but it sure is for me.

  10. I know madd bell I do the same thing I eat so much food then feel guilty I try to use food to self medicate
