Salt, Hypertension and Me (English Version)

Do you know? An average of 1 in 3 people in Malaysia suffers from High Blood Pressure This is about 30% of our Malaysian population. But why are we so concerned about high blood pressure? High blood pressure will lead to many other non communicable diseases like heart attack, stroke and kidney failure These diseases are among the causes of 72.8% of death in Malaysia! So, where did it all begin? One of the simplest answer lies in our food Salt is in all of our food Having too much salt will increase our blood pressure Do you know that we should not take more than a teaspoon of salt per day? Now let’s see how much salt we consume in a normal day Let’s start from our breakfast A plate of Malaysian favourite breakfast, Nasi Lemak. There’s about 1.9 gram of salt in one plate of nasi lemak, which means we have taken around 777mg of sodium What about lunch? Noodle soup perhaps? Adding that to the sodium meter, we have already taken more than the recommended amount of 1 teaspoon a day Oh No! But wait! We haven’t even had dinner yet.. What about fried rice for dinner Our salt intake has increased to nearly 2 teaspoons full! Oh Oh! Our average salt intake is 2.3 times HIGHER than the recommended intake everyday.. Now don’t you think it’s time that YOU did SOMETHING to reduce your salt?
