Medical Minute: Ischemic Colitis

Hi, I’m Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani. Today we’re
going to talk about something that can occur in patients who exercise
significantly, whether or not they have an eating disorder. And that something is
called ischemic colitis or diarrhea with blood in it that can occur after doing
exercise. This can occur in people who have eating disorders and who don’t.
Essentially, when people do significant exercise (and everyone’s different as to
what that is), blood flow is redistributed from feeding the intestines to taking
care of tired muscles and, as a result, parts of the colon can actually begin to
die off and slough off and cause bleeding. If you have an eating disorder,
you should not be doing significant exercise, but decreased fluids, decreased
nourishment, and decreased body reserves can make this more severe. For more go to
