‘Anorexic people have a deadly Superego’ Jordan Peterson on the role of the Superego

August 17, 2019

the dynamic unconscious it’s alive and it’s a compass that the mind is a composite of contradictory drives now the way Freud thought about this basically was that with the it’d and the ego and the super-ego so if you think about the it’d as the place where these contradictory drives emerge so it’s sort of nature within the ego is the thing that’s sort of being pushed back and forth by those contradictory drives and the super-ego is the thing that’s on top saying you better behave yourself you better behave yourself and so it’s a different model than the Piaget Ian model because Piaget assumed that what would happen is that as the child and I like the Piaget and model better I think I think in healthy development the Piaget daeun model is correct but an unhealthy development I think the Freudian model is correct that instead of integrating say the aggressive and sexual drives for the sake of argument into your personality as you develop what happens is the super-ego just represses them instead so they don’t become a dynamic part of you integrated into your ego they’re just repressed you just don’t manifest them and so that’s how you be a good person and you can be the victim of a very harsh super-ego and that often happens if you’ve had a particularly tyrannical parent one or both or maybe a tyrannical grandparent or maybe you’re your own inner tyrant and you’ve picked up tyrannical voices through your whole life and aggregated them into this parable judge that’s always watching you that’s criticizing everything you do and restricting you badly and really badly and what you’re allowed not allowed to do you see that with anorexic women well then could be anorexic too but it’s much much less rare they have super egos that are just Earth’s one way of thinking about it that’s just they’re just deadly they’re just criticizing every bit of them well right to the point they’re really criticizing the amount of existence right is you have to be so perfect that the perfection is not aligned with the ability to live you don’t get to eat you know and and people like that they look at their bodies they even look at their bodies incorrectly like anorexic seem to be unable to see their bodies as a whole they can only see their bodies as parts and when you start seeing your body as parts you’re really in trouble because you can’t get a offensive actually what it looks like and body perception is very very complicated but anyways Piaget thought about the ego as in some senses the game that’s played by all these dynamic drives that’s shaped by the broader community and so that could all be integrated but Freud would say well look when that doesn’t happen instead you’re subject to the tyranny of the super-ego and it just says you should never be angry right you should never express yourself sexually because if you do there’s something wrong with you you’re a bad person and you’re a bad person if you ever get aggressive for and so and then people who are living like that under those circumstances you know they get they well they’re they’re repressed is the right way to think about it

  1. People tend to cut these videos just a little differently depending on what they want to hear, and their reasons for doing so are always interesting to consider.

  2. I really REALLY needed to hear this. Now I have a much better understanding as to why im almost NEVER aggressive. According to Dr. Peterson, aggression is essential to attracting females. Now my only question is: How do I become aggressive without feeling like a horrible person?

  3. Interesting, but not only can these insights be deduced from the Bible, the Bible offers a bigger and more practical framework to understand and work with them.

    1) 0:01 "the mind is a composite of contradictory drives: sex and aggression"
-> James 3:10a (NKJV) Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing.

    2) 0:12–0:31 id, ego & superego
    -> id/"nature within" = the flesh
Galatians 5:19-21a Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery,[c] fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders,[d] drunkenness, revelries, and the like

-> ego/"pushed back and forth by contradictory drives" = the will.
Matthew 6:24a “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other.
Galatians 5:16-17 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

-> superego/"on top saying you better behave yourself" = Your conscience combined with the "stronghold" you have built (things/lies you consciously or subconsciously chose to believe that end up building a strong web of associations in your mind).
Romans 2:14-15 for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, 15 who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them)
John 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

    3) 0:49–1:32 superego repressing sexual and aggressive drives so "they don't become a dynamic part of you, integrated into your ego. You just don't manifest them" "You can be the victim of a very harsh superego".."if you've had a particularly tyrannical parent" or "maybe you're your own inner tyrant and you've picked up tyrannical voices through your whole life and aggregated them into this terrible judge"…
-> You chose to believe the lies that those drives are bad in all their forms while they have their functions. Your stronghold/what you believe causes you to act on those beliefs and therefore they're not in alignment with your will and therefore you don't manifest them.

    4) 1:38–1:52 "They have superegos.. that are just, just deadly"… "they're criticising them out of existence"
-> The stronghold has become so strong and the conscience has become so tainted that the will ends up being destructive.
->2 Timothy 2:26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
-> Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

It's interesting how many people gladly accept (almost to the point of conversion) psychoanalytic ideas like "psychological repression", "ego", etc. with little scientific research, but mockingly discard the idea of "satan/devil". A therapy based on the Bible would strongly resemble cognitive behavioural therapy which has a big body of evidence that support it.

    Matthew 7:24-27
24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

  4. How the hell does he know we see our bodies in parts?!! My doctors who are experts on anorexia don't even know that!

  5. Psychedelics are thought of as ‘mind-expanding’ drugs, so it has commonly been assumed that they work by increasing brain activity,” says Nutt. “Surprisingly, we found that psilocybin actually caused activity to decrease in areas that have the densest connections with other areas.” The largest decreases were observed in the the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the anterior and posterior cingulate cortices (ACC and PCC, respectively).
The scans also showed a reduction in functional connectivity between the mPFC and PCC, so that their normally synchronous activity was de-synchronized. Furthermore, the intensity of the drug’s effects — as reported, subjectively, by the participants — was closely related to the extent of decreased ACC and mPFC activity, with the strongest effects associated with the largest decreases.

Robert M. Sapolsky http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Sapolsky "Sapolsky later adds that when the frontal cortex is destroyed in a person, "you have a 'frontal' patient—sexually disinhibited, hyperaggressive, socially inappropriate. The frontal cortex is the closest thing we have to a neural basis for the superego.""

  6. If Anorexic people have a deadly Superego is it possible to get just a “little bit dangerous Superego” ?
I have about 50lbs I need to lose.

  7. Anorexics seem to have a sadistic superego-ego, meaning that they have a separate ego demanding them what to do, often this ego is highly sadistic. Almost like a demonic entity commanding them and others in their vicinity. Anorexics can be cruel and sadistic towards others as well, highly abusive especially towards their own children.
